TOMATO, TOMATO.

have you ever had a tomato thrown at you? it doesn’t sound too appealing unless perhaps it lands on your face. yes it’s true, tomatoes may help improve the texture and appearance of your face! i learned of the “DIY tomato face scrub” through michelle phan a while ago, and never looked into it until recently largely because it sounded gross. i also tried skincare products that include tomato before (like burt’s bees tomato toner) and didn’t notice spectacular results. but after some thinking, i combined this scrub with an ingredient that is known to help the skin– namely, green tea– and gave it a go.

here’s what i used:
- slice of tomato (top)
- sugar
- lipton green tea bag

a lot of people will recommend using all-organics. this is not a bad idea considering the things sprayed on vegetables and plants, but i didn’t use any and i survived.

i cut open the green tea bag and placed the loose leaves on a small plate. i then added sugar to the plate and mixed both ingredients. finally, i pressed to tomato “cleansing pad” and let the juices soak in the sugar and green tea. then, i massaged the pad onto my face and let it sit for about 10 minutes. i tried this scrub twice, and i kind of like it. it leaves the skin feeling and looking smooth and healthy, and the green tea tones down any redness from acne. it’s gentle enough to be applied more frequently than a lemon juice scrub, and it doesn’t leave any nasty smells on your face. i’m not really sure if the tomato contains anything that helps the skin, but i do like the results of this scrub so far.

on a related note, a study confirmed that including more tomatoes in your diet does protect your skin from damaging sun rays. so don’t forget its original purpose!
